Cleared by the FDA in late 2012, the device makers, Cynosure, began selling the device to physicians in early 2013.

An estimated 20 percent of individuals in the US with at least one tattoo wish to have it removed. By offering this innovative device for patients, the doctors at Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein Institute are able to help more patients remove stubborn blue and green ink from under the skin. The laser saw nearly 94% clearance of blue and green tattoo ink in the 22 subject clinical study.

The PicoSure laser system typically requires multiple treatments, but due to the picosecond technology, involving rapid pulses to the tattoo ink, fewer treatments are required versus traditional tattoo removal technologies.
